Lancashire Ladies

Penny Thompson, nee Burrows

Penny, Champion of Lancashire Ladies' County Golf Association in 1970, died very suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday 16th January 2023.

Our thoughts go to her family at this time.

Penny was a junior member at Pwllheli, Formby Ladies and West Lancashire Golf Clubs where her ability soon became apparent.

In 1964 a 15 year old Penny and her mother were runners-up in the Northern Foursomes. In 1966 Penny qualified in her first Lancashire Ladies’ Championship.

A year later she was selected for England Girls v Canada, represented LLCGA for the first time and was a member of the winning Lancashire team at the Northern Counties Championship.

In that same year, 1967, she won The British Girls’ Championship at Liphook Golf Club.

While at University in Liverpool she became something of a trail-blazer by playing in the men’s team, from back tees.

Penny won the Lancashire Ladies’ Championship in 1970.

After studying theology in London, in 1982 Penny rejoined The West Lancashire Golf Club where her name appears on honours boards over seventy times.

It was a source of great personal pleasure for Penny to follow in her mother’s footsteps by winning the Lancashire County Vets Championship in 2003 and to retrace the footprints once more when she became Lady Captain at West Lancashire Golf Club in 2007.

Penny was a special woman and exceptional golfer. She died on Monday 16th January 2023 after a sudden catastrophic illness. Her club and the wider golfing community is the poorer now she is no longer there.
